Recap: Minna Öberg is a visual artist from Åland, Finland, working with installation art, photography, painting and other mediums. She likes to use recycled materials and is inspired by street art and detalis in everyday life.
She arrived with the intention of exploring insects inspired by the expression “cultural termite” found in the book Detta möte – anteckningar från Benin by Vivi-Ann Sjögren. Wanting to define, locate, map and sketch patterns on the theme of pests. When are they useful and when are they a health risk? Can you find something beautiful or positive in the pest/parasite? Patterns. Colors. Shapes. And how can one try to contribute to the place as a person/artist and avoid becoming a parasite
Born and raised on an island – when arriving at Villa Karo the first place to visit was the ocean. During her stay, she continued the daily meetings with the sea which turned out to be her material provider and source of inspiration. Collect, deconstruct, transform, find the patterns and something beautiful in ocean waste. The original idea took different routes. Who knew a discarded book about bacterial diseases could turn out to be a useful guide in pattern making for an artist adrift?
During her residency, she initiated two workshops with beads for local children, making bracelets and necklaces. Beads will also appear in her artwork as metameres discovering and piercing through driftwood found at Grand Popo. To be continued…
